There are far too many events in Los Angeles to keep track of — especially during the summer months. For art and culture lovers, here’s a quick guide to L.A.’s upcoming summer art institution openings.
LACMA is one of the city’s premier art institutions, and their upcoming exhibits will not disappoint. On June 24th, their first new exhibit of the summer, “To Rome and Back: Individualism and Authority in Art, 1500-1800”, opens, taking visitors on an art historical journey. For something more technical, “3D: Double Vision” puts on display artworks that work with producing three-dimensional illusions on July 15th. Finally, on August 11th, a retrospective on the famed experimental contemporary artist, “Rauschenberg: In and About L.A.”, celebrates his time spent in the city.
MOCA, one of the world’s finest contemporary art institutions, is hosting “69: Déjà vu”, an exhibition celebrating the avant-garde work of the anonymous LA designer. The first ever solo exhibition of the designer shows how the groundbreaking garments have toyed with ideas of gender and inclusivity. The exhibit runs from August 4th to October 28th and is perfect for any fashion lover.
Last but not least, the Getty Museum will have two major summer openings. The first, opening June 26th and going until October 28th, is called “Artists and Their Books/Books and their Artists”. It explores the visual presentation of the relationship between artists and their books in an interactive exhibition, where visitors are invited to explore the books themselves. The second, which also opens June 26th, is “Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, 1911-2011”. Take in one hundred years of modern fashion photography, presented alongside costumes, illustrations, magazines, videos, ads, and more.
